Postcard from the Subtropics

Just a quick administrative note: I'm staying for a few days at my grandmother's house in Florida, where the Internet is, as usual, not working (I'm writing this in a Starbucks). I was counting on updating my blog at least a couple of times during this visit, but it looks like my next real post will be from San Francisco later this week. In the meantime, I'll have to content myself with working on my dissertation (which is what I should be doing anyway), wasting my monthly data trying to determine whether I'm actually an INTP and not an INFJ, nursing the sunburn I managed to get on my waist, reading Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker, and wearing the hell out of my awesome new sunglasses:


I feel like it's 2007 and I'm updating my LiveJournal, but that's not really a bad feeling. I hope you're all having a not-too-odious Monday. <3

I've fallen behind on my promised Glossier reviews (surprising no one, I'm sure), but here's the first of two Glossier-centric posts that I hope will make up for my dereliction. Beauty Abroad, Part 13: Topshop Matte Lip Bullet in Get Me Bodied

BABY, ALL I WANT IS TO LET IT GO AIN'T NO WORRIES, NO WE CAN DANCE ALL NIGHT... Ahem. On my previous trip to the UK, I limited my Topshop damage to two nail polishes and an eyeshadow . This time I was eager to try one of Topshop's many lip products, and I settled on the Matte Lip Bullet in Get Me Bodied (£8), a dark magenta-plum. Topshop's Lip Bullets are thin twist-up lipsticks in matte black-and-white tubes with clear plastic caps. The white plastic looks sleek when new, but it can easily get messy if you remove or replace the cap too hastily. The testers in the Topshop store looked downright gory. The Lip Bullets come in two finishes, satin and matte; slapdash Google research indicates that the satin bullets came out last year and the matte ones this summer. Pan That Palette 2016: Nude 'Tude Revisited

It occurs to me that I was a little unfair to the MakeupRehab subreddit in my resolutions post . Yes, there are a few things I dislike about that community. I don't think people should force themselves to finish or pan products they detest; all that means is that they neglect the products they do like and come to see makeup as a grim chore. Nor am I fond of the scolding, self-righteous tone of some MakeupRehab commenters, or the consumerism disguised as minimalism (obsessing over X aspect of makeup is no more virtuous than obsessing over Y aspect of makeup). But let me be clear: I'm still glad that MakeupRehab exists. It's a refreshing alternative to the YOLO BUY ALL THE THINGS mentality that exists elsewhere in the beauty blogosphere. For that matter, I'm not opposed on principle to Project Pans and the like, though I do raise an eyebrow at some people's reasons for using up products.
