Skincare Routine, Fall 2016

Image
My archives tell me that I haven't written a comprehensive skincare post since February 2015 (!), and a lot has changed since then. When better to post my updated routine than on the coldest day of fall so far? Though I don't really alter my skincare regimen from season to season, perhaps you'll find something in here that will help you winter-proof your own face. Before we start, a few words about my skin type and current routine. My skin is on the dry side of normal, and it's not particularly sensitive: I don't get hives or rashes from products, though some sunscreens and masks have been known to break me out. My skin is also quite thin, especially around my eyes. I've had a few fine lines there for several years, though regular moisturizing seems to have diminished them, at least for now. I used to have semi-regular eczema flare-ups around my eyes and ears, but that hasn't happened for a few years. I reliably get a couple of small pimples every ...

Empties and Near-Empties, Spring 2015

Image
(I typed "Spring 2013" at first, then spent a few seconds wondering why that didn't look right.) Not quite five months since my last empties post , I've accumulated another small collection of used-up products: Herewith, some mini-reviews, in no particular order: CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara There's a reason why I never write posts about mascara: I find it really boring. I don't understand the obsession that some people have with attaining super-thick or super-long lashes. I like my mascara to look as natural and non-clumpy as possible, and I've been using LashBlast Length ever since Eva Chen recommended it on her tumblr , which must have been three years ago. The formula is on the thin side, and it coats my lashes evenly and doesn't smear or flake. Until I find an affordable cruelty-free mascara that produces the same effect, I'll keep buying this one--and occasionally forgetting to put it on, because I truly could not be less interested in ...

Empties, Fall 2014

Image
I've used up quite a few products, mostly skincare, in the last month or two, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to write my first empties post. I've been wondering why so many people (myself included) love such posts. Maybe because it's the closest the law-abiding among us will ever come to the thrill of rifling through someone else's household trash. Maybe because it gives us all hope that we, too, will someday have the excuse to buy a bunch of new things. In the world of beauty addiction, the optimist's glass (or tube, or pan, or jar) is always half empty. I wanted to delay this post until I'd used up Revlon Plum Velour, so that I could have an exciting empty tube of lipstick, but the empty containers of everything else kept piling up... 1. Burt's Bees Royal Jelly Eye Creme Eye cream is the Pascal's Wager of cosmetics. I suspect that most eye creams are placebos, but what if they're not? Once you start using eye cream, there's no way ...

Convicted of Purgery

Image
Convicted, rather, of truly painful punning. Sometimes I just can't help it. Welcome to my very first purge post! It will probably also be my last in a while, since it saddens me so much to throw anything out. I'm both a sentimental hoarder and an incorrigible cheapskate--a deadly combination where makeup collecting is concerned. But after I came home from England last week, I embarked on a massive apartment-cleaning project, in the course of which I managed to fill a bag with makeup I should have thrown out long ago... The condemned, in more or less chronological order: 1. Revlon Nail Polish in Silver Screen Date of purchase: 2009 or 2010 Crime: I haven't used Silver Screen in about four years, though it was the first nail polish I really coveted, which gives it a special place in my heart. Throughout college, the idea of wearing nail polish made me uncomfortable. I didn't want to seem frivolous or childish (I was a Serious Intellectual, dontchaknow), and I also had ...

Skincare Routine, April 2014

Image
Ceci n'est pas une skincare post . I hesitated for a while before writing this post, because I've had a skincare routine for only two years, which makes me an utter amateur compared to my favorite beauty bloggers. Before the age of 24, I did almost nothing to my skin. I never moisturized, because I didn't know that women under 40 used moisturizer. I wore SPF only during the summer. I'd always had good skin, so it never occurred to me that I might need to put anything on it. Why should I when it looked like this? 19-year-old me in biology lab. Look at that fresh-faced, rosy-cheeked little jerk. I call this photo "Our Lady of the Arthropods." I forget why 24 was the turning point for me. Maybe it was the melancholy realization that I could no longer claim to be in my early twenties. Maybe it was that my discovery of makeup meant more time in front of the mirror, and more mirror time meant closer examination of my epidermis, and wait, were those lines under my e...
