Playing Matchmaker

An especially frivolous post tonight, inspired by Lena's comment on my review of NARS Angela. I mentioned in the post that Angela was a perfect match for one of my favorite nail polishes, OPI Ate Berries in the Canaries, and Lena wrote, "I used to pair up lippies and polishes and even labeled them, so I do understand this type of joy." I'm not sure I've ever consciously matched my lipstick to my nail polish, but Lena's comment inspired me to go through my stash and find some color pairings. Not all of these are perfect matches, but it turns out that I have more near-matches than I expected! Alas, I don't have any blue or green lipstick to go with my mint and cobalt polishes...

And the pairing that started it all, magenta: OPI Ate Berries in the Canaries and NARS Angela.

In the last couple of weeks, I've been a bad early modernist: I've watched the BBC miniseries of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall without first reading the books. I did start reading Wolf Hall two years ago, but I just couldn't get into it, despite my childhood obsession with Tudor history. There's something about grad school that makes one averse to novels set in the time period one studies. (My own research interests lie in Stuart, not Tudor, England, but the early 16th century is close enough.) However, I didn't have any trouble getting absorbed in the BBC version, not least because of its aesthetic richness. The indoor scenes are filmed in deep shadow to evoke an era before electricity. The costumes and hairstyles make me feel like I'm watching Holbein portraits come to life (indeed, Holbein makes a cameo in the fourth episode). Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 25 Coral Sunset

Surprise! I'm allowing myself to write one quick post during this hiatus. Today I'll be skipping over my backlog of unreviewed products to take a look at my most recent purchase, a new product that hasn't yet received much attention online. Sephora massively expanded its Cream Lip Stain range last month, adding 27 new shades, mostly trendy browns, purples, and taupes, plus some offbeat colors like black and teal for the goth mermaids out there. The Cream Lip Stain formula has been around for at least a few years (you've probably heard of Endless Red and Marvelous Mauve), and it tends to garner positive reviews. Being generally indifferent to liquid lipstick, I'd never taken much interest in the Cream Lip Stains, but that changed during a visit to Sephora at the end of December. A Visit to the Glossier Showroom

I've fallen behind on my promised Glossier reviews (surprising no one, I'm sure), but here's the first of two Glossier-centric posts that I hope will make up for my dereliction. I've been testing Glossier's new mascara, Lash Slick, for the past month, and I finally set foot in the Glossier ~*~showroom~*~ earlier this week. The Glossier showroom started as a pop-up shop, but became a permanent fixture in NYC's trendy Soho neighborhood at the end of 2016.
